Wild weather just makes mountain biking in Borgarfjörður eystri more exciting! You'll climb rocky trails dotted with wildflowers to epic views, then blast down an exhilarating descent. Want to cap off the day right? Finish with a relaxing spa, tasty local food, and stories under the midnight sun. It's what Iceland is all about.

Although inaccessible by car (as many of the best places in Iceland are), there are a number of trails that will take you to Stórurð. They vary in length, but all of them take at least two hours to complete, which translates to a full day of exploring with stops by the turquoise lake and games of hide-and-seek in between the boulders.

Borgarfjörður eystri is an interesting place to mountain bike right now. There are no official mountain biking trails (we’re trying to change that) so most of our riding experience here now is centered on riding access roads, old national trails and unsanctioned hiking trails. During a particularly cloudy day in July, my wife and I decided to explore the mountain road that leads into the deserted inlet of Breiðavík.

While the puffins may be the reason some travellers visit, there is something undeniably magical about the past, the present and the future of this little village that shouldn't be ignored.
